Cheese 101 on November 20th! Cut-off for Thanksgiving Boards is 11/23.
Hi, I'm Jennifer Harvey, the founder and owner of Grater Goods in Jacksonville. Being a cheesemonger and owning a cheese shop was never my plan. Frankly, before 2014 I didn't know what a cheesemonger was, nor had I ever been to a proper cheese shop.
I grew up like most Americans, eating cheese from the grocery store. I do have memories of my father eating "stinky" cheese from Europe a friend had gifted him. He, per my mother's orders, kept it double wrapped in the "beer" fridge in the furnace room in our basement. I never tried it, but I remember how happy that cheese made him. Sadly, once it was gone, we were back to grocery store Swiss and Cracker Barrell Cheddar, which I still love.
Fast forward to 2010 or so, I watched a television piece about the Cowgirl Creamery in California. It highlighted the owners, Sue Conley and Peggy Smith and the cheeses that they were producing. I got so excited, I ran out and bought a wheel of Mt. Tam and Red Hawk, the rest is history. This started me on the journey to where I am today, thanks ladies.
Several years later, I lost my job in corporate America. Shortly after I was on the Buchman bridge coming back from spending a good chunk of my severance money on artisan cheese at Whole Foods. I realized that there was not a dedicated cheese shop in Jacksonville. Well, it took some time, and I got side-tracked on the way, but in March of 2016 I opened Grater Goods.
So, after nearly 8 years, here we are, a specialty cheese shop in the heart of one of Jacksonville's great historic neighborhoods, Murray Hill. We love our neighborhood and fellow merchants and wouldn't want to be anywhere else. The shop continues to change, adapting to food trends and customer requests. We've loved getting to know our regulars and being able to text or call them when their favorites come in.
So please come visit us, ask questions, sample something you've never had before. We look forward to seeing you and helping you discover cheese beyond cheddar and Swiss. Want to know what's going on here in the shop? Follow us on social media.
We carry a big variety of products like cheese, charcuterie, tinned fish, caviar, locally made products and almost everything you'll need to produce a beautiful cheese and charcuterie board. Or we'll make a board for you, see Boards and boxes page.
We highlight American cheese makers but have added imported cheeses along the way. We rotate some cheeses, while others are pretty much here all the time. We purchase cheese directly from American cheese makers, and distributors. We also have a resource in France which provides us with some of the best that country has to offer.
At Grater Goods, we pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service. Our knowledgeable staff is always ready to answer your questions and help you find the perfect cheese for your needs. We also offer catering services for events and parties, as well as cheese platters for any occasion.
